Scoil Samhraidh Chris Langan 2009
We have just completed yet another extremely successful Scoil Samhraidh Chris Langan. A lively weekend was had in the town of Rush, where many sessions and events were held.
On Thursday evening, at the Opening Ceremony at Rush Sailing Club, we were honoured to have His Excellency, Mr. Pat Binns, the Canadian Ambassador to Ireland, in attendance (pictured 2nd left in top picture, with local dignitaries and committee members). This was a fitting tribute to, and recognition of the links between Canada and Rush, through the emigration of Chris Langan, a local piper, to Toronto, in the 1950's. This is what the Ambassador had to say about his visit:
Hi Lenny:
I greatly enjoyed last night. It was a pleasure to represent Canada. I am now trying to find Bill Gussen who was with you the 1st year.
Thanks so much for the beautiful "Canadian flagged" bodhrain. I willl have to learn how to play so I can join in with the great craic another time.
Hope that the weekend is a resounding success, and please extend my thanks to all of your group and Festival organizers.
Sincerely,
Pat Binns
Ambassador / Ambassadeur
Embassy of Canada / Ambassade du Canada
By coincidence, a group of Canadian tourists, (pictured bottom right with Mr. Binns), had arrived in Rush on Thursday morning, and were invited to attend too. In fact, so taken were they with the atmosphere of the night, they were reluctant to leave Rush for other destinations over the weekend, and were found enjoying a mighty session on Friday night!!
The Gala Concert, held on Friday night in the Millbank Theatre, was a treat for all, especially the proud parents of our young musicians and dancers, who practiced so hard over the last few months. Thanks also to the Millbank Theatre Committee for providing such a professional venue yet again for our concert. Special thanks goes to Seán Corcoran, Mary Torsney and Phil Corcoran, who were our backstage crew for the night.
Ciarán from Near FM attended the concert and spoke with some committee members and musicians, as Ghaeilge. He left with a clear impression that something special was going on in Rush and looks forward to visiting us again next year, to cover the whole weekend!!
Earlier on Saturday afternoon, there was a great turnout for all our workshops, with lots of lively music and dancing in Rush National School. You can see footage of the different classes that were held on Saturday on Fingal Community TV.
It must be acknowledged that none of the success of the Scoil Samhraidh Chris Langan 2009 would have happened had it not been for the dedicated team that are the Rinceoil Fingal Committee and their helpers, who have been planning and putting into action all the events that happened over the weekend. Well done to all and a well deserved rest is on the cards - for a little while anyway!!
Thanks, too, to all the parents, whose co-operation and support for Concert practices and performances has been most appreciated.
And finally, thanks to all the children and adults who participated so fully in any way over the weekend, whether in concert practices, performances or attendance at the workshops. This is what Rinceoil Fingal is about - participation, fun and learning traditional music and dance!!
Check out photos of the various events of the weekend!
By the way, if you have photos of the various events over the Scoil Samhraidh weekend, send them to info@rinceoilfingal.com, preferably in jpeg, in small format. We'd love to get them for our Photo Gallery. Be sure you have the permission of the people in the photos, especially if they are photos of children!
