The Legacy of Rush Piper, Chris Langan

Chris Langan was born in Rush and had a great interest in traditional music. Chris was a member of the Rush Pipe Band which is still going strong. He emigrated to Canada.
The Chris Langan Traditional Irish Music Weekend in Toronto is an annual event focussing on the promotion of Irish traditional music, singing and dancing. It is the only annual event of its kind in Canada.
Held every year since 1992, the Chris Langan Weekend brings together traditional Irish singers, musicans and dancers from across Ontario Quebec, the US, Britain and Ireland for three days of workshops, concerts, céilís, and seisiúin. Each year's Chris Langan Weekend features instructional workshops at varying skill levels on instruments such as uillean pipes, fiddle, tin whistle, flute, concertina, banjo and harp as well as on traditional singing, set dancing and reed-making/uillean pipe maintenance. In addition to providing younger players with the opportunity to learn from more experienced players, the Weekend features two concerts by some of the finest local and international traditional Irish musicians and singers.
The event is held each year in the memory of the late Rush uilleann piper, pipe maker and piping teacher Chris Langan.

Chris Langan emigrated to Toronto in the 1950's and for nearly four decades was one of the leading musicians in Toronto's Irish community. Chris died in May 1992, but has left behind a vibrant traditional Irish Music scene.

Past Chris Langan weekends have attracted some of the worlds most prominent uilleann pipers and recording artists, including Paddy Keenan, Mick O'Brien, Jerry O'Sullivan, Jimmy O'Brien-Moran, Tommy Keane, Kevin Rowsome, Tomas Canainn, Ronan Browne, Brian and Cillian Vallely, Robbie Hannan, Ciarnan O'Malle, Patrick Orceau and Harry Bradley and have received critical acclaim from our arts community. The weekends have been featured in banner articles on th front page of the entertainment sections of Canada's national newspapers as well as receiving extensive coverage on several commercial radio and TV stations.
Without the Chris Langan Weekend, it would not be possible for the music community or the gerneral public to see and hear Irish Traditional music of the the standard offered by our invited musicans. In addition, the weekend has contributed significantly to the nurturing of a healthy Irish music community, active all year round, while building on Chris Langan's Legacy.

In his honour, Rinceoil Fingal carry on the legacy, holding Scoil Samhraidh Chris Langan every year at the end of June.
